Why I do what I do

Why I do what I do

Walking through life with people is the most rewarding career I could possibly imagine.

I serve members in…

Hampton Roads and the Outer Banks communities. I'm also always looking for an excuse to visit your state!

I can help you plan for life using a variety of tools, including…

life insurance and annuities.

I enjoy working with…

families, business owners (especially small-business owners), individuals approaching retirement, women, military members and first responders.

I attended…

William and Mary; Universitaet Kassel, Hesse, Germany, (Fulbright Scholar attached to the Brothers' Grimm Archives); and the University of Virginia.

Before Modern Woodmen, I…

was a French teacher for 14 years, worked in advertising for six years, was a practice manager for five years, and was at a different broker-dealer for three years.

I chose Modern Woodmen because…

it is a strong organization with 143 years of history heavily focused on holistic support for its members, a deep focus on giving back to the community, and a record of treating employees like family.

The best part of my career is…

helping members have peace of mind, understand their finances, and communicate those to their loved ones.

A favorite moment in my career was when…

listening to members express hopes and dreams and watching their spouses learn new things about them.

Also…

before I began working in financial services, I thought the industry was about numbers and money. After I started working in the industry, I realized it's about people, relationships and community – and that's why I love it so much!

“"As for the future, your task is not to foresee it, but to enable it." - Antoine de Saint-Exupéry”

My life outside of work

My family includes…

my fiancé, Chris; our silver Labrador retriever, Smokey; my father, Jim; mother, Cheryl; sister, Amy; her husband, Michael; and their children, Elora and Boaz.

In my free time, you can find me…

seeing live music, particularly at the Tap Shack in Duck, North Carolina; Avalon Pier in Kill Devil Hills, North Carolina; and New Realm Brewing Company in Virginia Beach. You'll also find me playing Puzzles & Survival as Commander UmphLovesWar in the Wraiths of Smaug alliance in State 831.

I’m passionate about…

faith, family, community, my home state (Virginia, Mother of Presidents), the Outer Banks, live music and local businesses, which I love promoting and supporting.

My greatest blessing is…

my faith in God; my partner, Chris; my father, Jim; and our dog, Smokey.

My personal motto is…

"Attention is the rarest and purest form of generosity." – Simone Weil

My hidden talent is…

I have an unusual knack for connecting seemingly unrelated dots and helping people make sense of complex situations. My superpowers are pattern recognition, translating complexity into clarity, finding the right people, turning chaos into a plan, and seeing systems rather than isolated problems.

Also…

I'm a French philosophy nerd, Fulbright Scholar, Star Wars fan, live music enthusiast (Umphrey's McGee, Phish, Widespread Panic, Spafford, and moe.), AI thought leader, community builder, professional dot-connector, systems thinker, and lifelong learner.

Community impact

My local community impact

I have lived in my community…

my entire life. I was born and raised in Virginia Beach and have owned my home for over 23 years. My grandmother built my home in Southern Shores, North Carolina, over 40 years ago.

What I like best about my community is…

how many wonderful places there are to eat, walk, socialize and enjoy live music outdoors.

My favorite volunteer activities are…

with the organizations my family supports, particularly JCOC, PIN Ministries, Seton House, Samaritan House, and Crisis Pregnancy Center.

It’s very important to me to support my community. My favorite Modern Woodmen programs are:

our Hometown Hero events and any other events we attend alongside other organizations while providing volunteers or material and financial support.

Sunday, July 12: The conversation I hope we keep having. One thing I've appreciated over the past couple of weeks is the quality of the conversations these posts have started. People don't all agree and that's okay. The goal was never agreement, because the goal was observation. The more stories people share about how AI is becoming part of their daily lives, the better we'll understand what's actually happening. Every comment adds another perspective. Every experience reveals another piece of a rapidly changing picture. We're all learning together. And I suspect we're still in the very early chapters of understanding what it means to live well with AI. Thank you to everyone who's shared their experiences, challenged ideas respectfully, and added thoughtful perspectives to the discussion. I'm looking forward to continuing the conversation. Question: What's one topic about living with AI you'd like to explore next? #Sunday #SundayFunday #AI #ArtificialIntelligence #IntimAIcy #HumanCenteredAI #TechnologyAndSociety #HumanFlourishing

Saturday, July 11: Observation comes before opinion. One thing I've tried to practice throughout this series is something surprisingly simple - to approach my examination and thoughts about AI as field research. For better or for worse, AI has already been deployed. First, as a machine colleague to everyone in corporate America in the summer of 2025, next, as a virtual employee answering phones or automating tasks throughout late 2025 and the first half of 2026, as a kind of responsive live agent or interactive help function throughout the end of 2025 and now into 2026. We now live in a reality where some kind of AI functionality is available in almost every aspect of daily life. To understand how that works and what that means is not a hypothetical process. For me, this means that I start with observation first. What am I seeing? Where am I seeing it? Next, I carefully name what I am observing. Since last fall, I've been slowing naming, creating and collecting my own vocabulary set to describe particular moments we all have with AI where we might fall into the trap of labeling an interaction with AI using standard existing human vocabulary. Only after I have spent a great amount of time observing, recording what I see, naming it, tracking it, thinking about it, then, sometimes, I might speculate on what that means. Or what it may mean over time. Because the reality is, we don't know. AI is fully deployed and it is available in almost every system we touch throughout our day. That may be why some are so susceptible to fear or to exhilaration. It's certainly tempting to rush toward conclusions whenever a new technology appears. And hypothesizing, or simply exploring thoughts about what something is or what it might mean is a common way we humans process new information or major changes in our lives. There's nothing wrong with imagination, or thinking simply to think. But History suggests that's rarely the wisest approach if we truly want to understand what is happening and have a chance to understand what might or will happen. So before deciding exactly what AI is... Let's pay attention to what people are actually doing with it. Before predicting the future... Let's understand the present. Sometimes careful observation is more valuable than a confident opinion. Question: What's one thing you've observed about AI that surprised you? #Saturday #AI #ArtificialIntelligence #CriticalThinking #TechnologyAndSociety #HumanCenteredAI #ThoughtLeadership
