Why I do what I do

Why I do what I do

because I want to make a difference in the lives of others.

I serve members in…

the San Francisco Bay Area. However, with more people connected virtually, I can now work with people in other parts of the country. I now have members in Arizona, Missouri and Nevada.

I can help you plan for life using a variety of tools, including…

life insurance, annuities, stocks, bonds, ETFs and mutual funds.

I enjoy working with…

people approaching retirement. Retirement is one of the biggest financial decisions in most people's lives. I can help you make the best decisions with proper distribution and general planning.

I attended…

the University of California, Santa Cruz, graduating with a degree in economics. I took a lot of finance classes. I enjoy solving problems with numbers more than with words. I've been like that for as long as I can remember.

I am very proud of…

working with a woman who was unsure if she could retire. She worked well past the normal retirement age because she didn’t know if she could stop. I ran her numbers and some scenarios. We determined she had enough savings her money to last the rest of her life. She was very grateful. This was a turning point in my career.

Before Modern Woodmen, I…

worked as a banker and ran a side business cutting hair for about six years. It made me realize I enjoy being with people and having great conversations. In that way, by stint as a barber led me to where I am now.

I chose Modern Woodmen because…

I really liked Modern Woodmen’s business model; it exists for the benefit of its members and the community. I came to this business to help people, and the model reflects my ideals and beliefs. I felt like I could see myself here in the long run. Every year, we donate millions back into the community.

The best part of my career is…

At the end of the day, I can shut my office door feeling like I’ve brought value to someone, made their life a little bit better, and that they walked out of my office a little bit better informed.

A favorite moment in my career was when…

A member is famous on YouTube, with about 2 million subscribers, for cleaning shoes.

Also…

I look at life in a very holistic way. I want to be there for you from the day we start working together, through retirement, until the day you pass away. Money is an ongoing part of our lives. It continuously affects us and every time something changes in your life, your money situation changes, too. I want to be there every step of the way to help however I can.

My life outside of work

My family includes…

No wife or kids -- least not yet but working on it. at least not yet. But I have my parents, older brother, some uncles, aunts, nieces, nephews and cousins, all of whom live the Bay Area.

In my free time, you can find me…

traveling. I enjoy eating interesting food and consider myself a foodie. I enjoy watching basketball and having heated debates over NBA controversies. I like spending time with the people I love, whether it's my friends or family. I like cutting hair. That's still my hobby; I consider myself an artist.

I’m passionate about…

passing down lessons and advice that have helped me grow as a person. I have some principals I live by. I try living my life without ever regretting my decisions. I try to be forgiving and understand people for who they are and where they’re coming from.

My greatest blessing is…

the life my parents have provided me. I'm a first generation Chinese American, the first of my family to be born in the United States. My parents came here with no money and were unable to speak English, but they still made a good life for me and my older brother. They gave us the opportunity to go to school, have food on the table, a roof over our heads, and a college education. That's something a lot of people take for granted nowadays.

My personal motto is…

Trust the process!

My hidden talent is…

cutting hair.

Community impact

My local community impact

I have lived in my community…

for 20 years! I was born in San Francisco but lived in Castro Valley for most of my life.

What I like best about my community is…

how it's right in the middle of the Bay Area. It's close to everything, but safe and quiet, with not much going on. It's like the suburbs; the best of both worlds.

I’m a member of…

the Castro Valley/Eden Area Chamber of Commerce and Platinum chapter of BNI.

My favorite volunteer activities are…

working with local nonprofits and the Castro Valley/Eden Area Chamber of Commerce, where I’m a board member and ambassador. Partnering with nonprofits is a big part of what we do at Modern Woodmen. I hosted an event where I took a couple of my members Christmas shopping for two families that we “adopted” through a local shelter. It was great. We bought $500 worth of Christmas presents, wrapped them, and then delivered them to the families at the shelter.

It’s very important to me to support my community. My favorite Modern Woodmen programs are:

service projects and our Matching Fund program. I have a member whose sister was in a bad car accident. She's going to make a full recovery, but it's going to take a lot of physical therapy and rehab. The family launched a GoFundMe page, and my Modern Woodmen chapter matched up to $2,500. Our local members have a say in choosing an organization or cause to benefit through matching funds.

My favorite memory from a fraternal event is…

A lot of people had the day off for Thanksgiving, so my members came out, met each other and celebrated. We all had a great time!
