Why I do what I do

Why I do what I do

I’m passionate about helping my members determine their financial goals. We work together to create a plan based on their unique needs.

I serve members in…

northwest Indiana and the Chicagoland area.

I can help you plan for life using a variety of tools, including…

life insurance, annuities and mutual funds.

I enjoy working with…

individuals, families, people approaching retirement, business owners and nonprofits.

I attended…

Olivet Nazarene University, where I earned a bachelor's degree in music education, and Indiana Wesleyan University, where I earned a master's degree in educational leadership.

Before Modern Woodmen, I…

taught middle school and high school band for 20 years.

I chose Modern Woodmen because…

I believe in how the organization supports members to reach their financial goals and the way it allows me to give back to my community.

The best part of my career is…

helping my members. Whether planning for retirement or protecting their families with life insurance, I feel good knowing I make a positive impact on their lives.

My life outside of work

My family includes…

my wife, Nicole; daughter, Addilyn; and son, Nolan.

In my free time, you can find me…

cheering on my kids at their fine arts performances, marching band, and karate. Also, spending time outdoors in the summer, serving at my church, or enjoying a cup of coffee with family and friends.

I’m passionate about…

my family and friends, and serving others. I also love serving on short-term mission teams here and abroad!

My greatest blessing is…

my family, health, and the opportunity to help others on their financial journeys.

My personal motto is…

"You can go anywhere and do anything if you don't care who receives the credit."

My hidden talent is…

I can play just about any musical instrument.

Community impact

My local community impact

I have lived in my community…

for the past 10 years.

What I like best about my community is…

the amazing people and the small-town feeling. You are only a stranger if you choose to be.

My favorite volunteer activities are…

hands-on activities where I can see the results of my hard work. I also enjoy activities that help children and allow me to bring along my own children to teach the importance of giving back to others.

It’s very important to me to support my community. My favorite Modern Woodmen programs are:

volunteering alongside other Modern Woodmen members.

"Why did you become a financial representative?" When I was asked this question recently, I said, “The kitchen table.” I could tell the response created a little confusion—but also curiosity. So I explained: Growing up, our kitchen table was the center of our lives. We gathered there for meals, board games, laughter, and conversations that shaped who I am. And then there were the other moments—the ones that taught me even more. I got my first job at 11 years old delivering newspapers (yes, I’m old enough that this was still a thing). At the end of each month, my family would bring the money we earned to the kitchen table. We’d sit together—my parents, my brother, and me—sorting through bills, deciding what we could pay, and learning how to stretch every dollar. It wasn’t always easy. But around that table, I learned about responsibility, sacrifice, communication, and the real-life weight of financial decisions. Those experiences shaped my view of money—not as something abstract, but as something that directly affects families, relationships, and futures. And I wouldn’t change any of it. Today, that kitchen table is the reason I do what I do. As a financial representative, I help families build lives where their money supports their goals and experiences—rather than being a constant source of stress. I help people move from just trying to survive to building a secure future with a clear, confident plan.

As clocks spring ahead, now’s a great time to plan ahead, review your goals and check your progress. Small steps today can make a big difference tomorrow.

Don't leave your finances to luck. I can help you develop a personalized plan. Let's talk. 219-356-3010 or https://calendly.com/james-m-wasmundt
