A few months ago, I had the honor of delivering a speech at Windham Summerfest, recognizing Senator Bill Diamond as the Modern Woodmen Hometown Hero. I spoke about his tireless work to protect Maine’s children through Walk A Mile in Their Shoes, the nonprofit he founded to advocate for child safety and reform in our welfare system.
What I didn’t know then was that it would be one of the last public recognitions Bill would receive before his passing.
Standing on that stage, looking out at our community, I felt the weight of his legacy. Bill didn’t just talk about change—he fought for it. He gave a voice to children who had none, and he challenged all of us to do better, to care more deeply, and to act more boldly.
His passing is a profound loss, but his mission lives on. If you’ve ever wondered how you can make a difference, this is your moment. Support the work of Walk A Mile in Their Shoes. Attend a forum. Share their message. Advocate for the safety and dignity of every child in Maine.
Bill walked the walk. Now it’s our turn.
