Why I do what I do

Why I do what I do

I serve as a financial ally for my clients, partnering with them to reach their goals more quickly and avoid pitfalls along the way. My work is relational. I love working with my clients over time and watching them move in the direction of their dreams.

I can help you plan for life using a variety of tools, including…

life insurance, annuities, stocks, bonds, ETFs, mutual funds and variable annuities.

I enjoy working with…

individuals and business owners who are looking for holistic, personalized advice.

I attended…

the Templeton Honors College at Eastern University just outside Philadelphia, PA, where I earned my Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy in 2004 and my Master of Education in Multicultural Education in 2012.

I am very proud of…

our local Modern Woodmen chapter of volunteers, which has partnered with a host of very special community organizations in the tri-county Charleston area.

Before Modern Woodmen, I…

spent 10 years teaching high school English and Journalism, first in north Philadelphia and then in Hanahan, South Carolina. I taught students about Shakespeare and Whitman, Twain and Fitzgerald. Now I teach people how to avoid financial disaster and build toward their dreams.

I chose Modern Woodmen because…

our organization's fraternal approach offers us the opportunity to help people reach their own goals while also doing good in the community. By joining Modern Woodmen, members don't just help people in some far-off location, but right where they live!

The best part of my career is…

that moment when people realize that they can start working toward their dreams today instead of waiting for tomorrow, and that doing the right thing for themselves and their loved ones can also help the less fortunate in their community.

“I enjoy working with clients who want a partner, not just a quick purchase.”

My life outside of work

My family includes…

my superhero wife, Alina, and our three little whirlwinds, Jonathan, Sophie Grace and Joshua.

In my free time, you can find me…

playing soccer with my son Jonathan, reading princess stories with my daughter Sophie Grace, building forts with my son Joshua, running in circles with my one-year-old Josiah, and taking my wonderful wife out for ice cream. As a family we love growing fruits and vegetables in our backyard garden, watching superhero movies, playing frisbee golf, and walking Charleston’s waterfront.

I’m passionate about…

helping young people. First as a volunteer in a youth ministry and then as a high school teacher, I've had the opportunity to get to know some amazing students. I love their enthusiasm and their no-nonsense approach to life. It is a privilege to help them start building their financial houses and pursuing their dreams.

My greatest blessing is…

my relationship with the Lord, and the security that my family and I have in Him.

My personal motto is…

“Never once in my life did I ask God for success or wisdom or power or fame. I asked for wonder, and He gave it to me." -- Abraham Joshua Heschel

My hidden talent is…

the ability to eat my body-weight in chocolate peanut butter ice cream.

My local community impact

I have lived in my community…

since 2014. Before that, I lived in California, Wisconsin, Indiana, Virginia, Maryland, Pennsylvania and England. While I've lived in a number of places, Summerville is home. We're here to stay.

What I like best about my community is…

Summerville's small-town feel. Even though the community is growing at an amazing pace, the southern charm is ever-present. Neighbors say hello to each other and know each other's names; the cars don't honk at each other (at least, not too often); and we all love a good sweet tea.

My favorite volunteer activities are…

partnering with our Modern Woodmen chapter board to organize family-friendly community service projects and social events. Since 2018, we have cheered on the Riverdogs and the Stingrays, watched The Lion King on opening night, taken a private tour of Charles Towne Landing, savored barbeque at Swig and Swine, cooled off with ice cream at Ye Olde Fashioned, marched to raise money for clean drinking water in developing countries, honored hometown heroes and much more.

It’s very important to me to support my community. My favorite Modern Woodmen programs are:

partnerships we have developed with local nonprofit organizations, such as Metanoia, Doors to Freedom, Katie's Krops, Fresh Start Visions and others. I love seeing families working together, building relationships and partnering with others in their community to make a difference.

We Serve a Big God! Our goal for this fundraiser was to raise $2,500 in order to receive the full match from MWA. Our community rallied around the Meyer Family and showed up! Because of your generosity, we raised $2,985, which, combined with the $2,500 MWA match, brought us to a grand total of $5,485! We sold 425 vouchers and had 79 families participate. This marks our chapter’s largest matching funds total since 2016! The Lord is so faithful. We placed our hope and trust in Him — and He moved mightily. When we arrived at the family's home and saw tears streaming down Mrs. Meyer’s face, we were reminded once again of how gracious and loving our God is. Thank you for your support, prayers, and participation. We could not have done this without you. All glory to God! Ephesians 3:20- Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we could ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, for ever and ever! Amen.

Campfire Stories :30

What’s in a Name? The Story Behind “Modern Woodmen of America” We understand—Modern Woodmen of America is a name that often invites a second take. People usually ask us to repeat it, unsure they heard it right the first time. And when they do, their next question is usually: “What does it mean?” Let us explain. There’s no woodworking in our history. No cabinet making. No lumberjacks. Instead, our name is rooted in symbolism. Our founder, Joseph Cullen Root, was inspired by pioneer woodmen—those early settlers who cleared forests to build homes, create communities, and secure a future for their families. He saw a powerful metaphor in that: Just as the pioneers cleared physical obstacles, he envisioned an organization that would help families clear away financial burdens. That vision became reality on January 5, 1883, when Modern Woodmen of America was founded in Lyons, Iowa. A year later, we moved across the Mississippi River to Fulton, Illinois, and in 1897, we relocated downriver to Rock Island, Illinois, which remains our home office today. We’re proud of our name and the legacy it represents. We invite you to watch our commercial, which highlights the spirit of today’s pioneers—people who, like those before them, build a better future for their families and communities. https://youtu.be/kZx9VeGC-8E?si=TOAi-1sF0zyw1p5i
