How we make a difference

We feel it’s important to support the communities we serve because…

as community leaders, we believe it’s our responsibility.

We feel strongly about supporting our communities at a local level. One way we're able to make a positive impact is through Modern Woodmen activities and programs. We especially enjoy:

answering the call for our local nonprofit organizations and community leaders, working with our education foundations and classroom teachers, supporting our first responders and military, and recognizing the unsung heroes who work to make central and southern Indiana a more enjoyable place for families to thrive.

“It’s like learning a language. We get taught the alphabet, but it doesn’t mean we’ll be great at writing.” — JC English We weren’t talking about finance. We were talking about growth. About development. About what it really takes to get better at anything that matters. That line stuck with me. Because it’s true everywhere — leadership, relationships, community work… even financial planning. The alphabet matters. The fundamentals matter. But fluency? That takes repetition. Reflection. The willingness to stay in the messy middle long enough to actually improve. Letters become words. Words become sentences. Sentences become paragraphs. Paragraphs become chapters. And if we’re intentional enough… chapters become stories worth reading. That’s true for people. That’s true for communities. And yes — it’s true for building a strong financial future. Conversations like that are why I value time with guys like JC — thoughtful, grounded, and committed to building something meaningful where they live. Be Curious. Be Confident. Be Competitive. Comfort is a great place to visit. It’s a terrible place to build anything meaningful. Growth doesn’t come from waiting until you’re ready, it comes from raising the bar and meeting it in real time. The teams that win are the ones willing to be uncomfortable, have honest conversations, and hold the line on standards. Progress isn’t loud. It’s disciplined. Be Curious. Be Confident. Be Competitive. Over coffee, my friend Eric Saunders — who pours his heart into the work he does at the Boys & Girls Club — asked a question that’s been sitting with me: “Do we even know what it’s like to be human?” If you know Eric, then you know that coming from him, that question carries weight. Here’s a guy who shows up every day for kids in our community — building confidence, opening doors, and creating spaces where young people feel seen. At the same time, he’s bold enough to chase his own dreams — stepping onto stages as a stand-up comedian, putting himself out there, embracing the vulnerability that comes with growth. In a world that feels louder, faster, and more divided by the day, his question feels important. Being human isn’t about winning arguments. It’s not about headlines. It’s not about proving we’re right. It’s remembering that the person across from us is carrying something we can’t see. It’s choosing empathy when it would be easier to react. It’s having the courage to show up — imperfectly, vulnerably, authentically. Maybe being human starts there… Be Curious. Be Confident. Be Competitive. Be Kind. #UnapologeticallyFraternal Much Love & Cheers. Eric Saunders - Hope you’re bringing your other half to the Glitter & Gratitude Gala this year.
