Why I do what I do

Why I do what I do

I am so blessed to be able to make a living by helping others as well as their communities. Each day, I sit down and help people overcome financial concerns and obstacles. I also get to help my community with our fraternal programs and activities. It’s very rewarding to be able to do what I do.

I serve members in…

all of Maryland, and border areas of West Virginia, Delaware and Pennsylvania.

I can help you plan for life using a variety of tools, including…

life insurance and annuities.

I enjoy working with…

young families just starting their journey through life and senior members working on their various needs.

I attended…

Parkersburg South High School in Parkersburg, West Virginia, and Parkersburg Community College.

I am very proud of…

earning my FICF (Fraternal Insurance Counsellor, Fellow) designation.

Before Modern Woodmen, I…

I spent many years in management at Wendy's and Rent-A-Center.

I chose Modern Woodmen because…

I believe in the fraternal programs offered that allow my members to get more out of life.

The best part of my career is…

being able to give back to the community in which my members live.

A favorite moment in my career was when…

I discovered a small nonprofit zoo in Cumberland, Maryland, and through Modern Woodmen fraternalism, we were able to enhance their ability to care for some of God's most beautiful creatures.

“My personal motto is 1 + 1 = 3; together we accomplish more.”

My life outside of work

My family includes…

my wife of 39 years, Lynn, three adult children, a Maltese fur baby, and two cats.

In my free time, you can find me…

volunteering at one of our adopted projects throughout the state of Maryland and the West Virginia Panhandle.

I’m passionate about…

the emerging concept of telemedicine and teaching people how to get the most out of the months of their lives.

My greatest blessing is…

my wife. I jokingly say I married a preacher's daughter to help make sure I get into heaven.

My personal motto is…

1 + 1 = 3; together, we accomplish more.

My hidden talent is…

being able to multitask

Community impact

My local community impact

I have lived in my community…

since 1990 and in this location since 1996.

What I like best about my community is…

we're at the crossroads of America -- within 1.5 hours of Washington D.C., the Chesapeake Bay and the "Sweetest Place on Earth" (Hershey, Pennsylvania). I can have mountain adventures to my west, and American Revolution and Civil War history is all around us.

I’m a member of…

the Fraternal Alliance of Maryland, Delaware, and D.C, serving as president 2015-2018.

My favorite volunteer activities are…

Matching Fund fundraisers, especially the ones where I have a lot of sweat equity involved in raising the funds.

It’s very important to me to support my community. My favorite Modern Woodmen programs are:

Matching Fund projects to raise money for those in need.

My favorite memory from a fraternal event is…

looking back over the trees we have planted and the youth service club members we have encouraged along the way. Each of these are a measure of my own impact and little part of improving the world.

Coming home: The long journey from duty call to final watch.

Local Modern Woodmen members held a fundraiser for veterans memorials in our area, and we raised over $11,000. We welcomed keynote speaker Kris "Tanto" Paronto, one of the Benghazi, Libya, attack heroes from 2012. We brought the community together -- from sponsors to legislators to local people. This allowed Modern Woodmen to help fund a WWII memorial and a planned Vietnam veterans memorial.
