Why I do what I do

Why I do what I do

I see the importance of the services I provide, and I love to help others. This career allows me to do both!

Before Modern Woodmen, I…

worked many years as a corrections officer, then transitioned into health care as a sleep technologist. I’ve always felt a call to serve others. My unique work history helps me to be sensitive to different perspectives and communicate effectively with a variety of people.

I chose Modern Woodmen because…

the organization provides a holistic approach to financial wellness and gives back to those we serve.

The best part of my career is…

knowing I make a positive impact and providing peace of mind to my members.

“It's my job to make sure you have the essential foundation for a smart relationship with money. Together, we can plan, protect and prosper.”

My life outside of work

My family includes…

my incredibly supportive husband, Ryan; my bonus kiddos, Hayden and Grace; and our dogs, Breacher and Nellie.

In my free time, you can find me…

outside as much as possible. I also enjoy reading, cooking, and relaxing at our camper with my family and dogs.

I’m passionate about…

animals and rescue efforts. I’m a huge advocate for animal rights, and I will always support local organizations in combating overpopulation at shelters and rescues. Pets are part of our families, and they deserve to be treated as such. I’m also an avid reader and promote donations to our local free libraries in hopes of sharing the love of literacy with others.

My greatest blessing is…

being raised by some of the strongest and bravest women I have ever known. They say it takes a village, and I was blessed with a great one! I am also incredibly thankful to share my life with my best friend as my husband.

My personal motto is…

"You are most qualified to help the person you used to be." My past experiences help me understand and empathize with many life situations, and I want to help when I can.

Community impact

My local community impact

I have lived in my community…

almost my entire life. I’ve only lived outside Dodge County to attend Marian University in Fond du Lac.

What I like best about my community is…

I love the small-town culture and quiet of the country.

My favorite volunteer activities are…

doing hands-on projects or helping animals.

It’s very important to me to support my community. My favorite Modern Woodmen programs are:

the Birthday Book Club and local chapter activities.

My favorite memory from a fraternal event is…

when we provided matching funds to the Wisconsin Guardian Foundation to help pair a service dog with a veteran.

Therapy from four paws and a wagging tail

We partnered with the Wisconsin Guardian Foundation, a nonprofit dedicated to supporting U.S. military veterans, first responders and gold star families, on its Divots for Dogs golf outing. Through the Matching Fund project, we helped raise money to pair a service dog with a veteran. I'm proud to stand with this organization making such a meaningful impact! Life can change in an instant. I understand what it feels like to have the rug pulled out from under you, to experience major loss, and to try to keep moving forward while carrying the weight of it all. In those moments, it’s so important to make time to care for yourself — even if it’s only for a few quiet minutes. A walk outside, a cup of coffee in silence, a deep breath, a conversation with someone you trust… those small moments to relax and recharge matter more than we realize. I’ve also learned how important it is to prepare for the unexpected before life forces you to. Pre-planning and having difficult conversations ahead of time can help create stability and peace of mind during some of life’s hardest moments. You cannot pour from an empty cup, and taking care of yourself is not selfish — it’s necessary. I’m Rachel Martin, and I am turning personal experiences into purpose-driven planning so you can feel confident in your own future. 💙

#MotivationMonday

I had the opportunity to drop off children’s safety kits at NAMI of Washington County. The mission of NAMI is “to positively impact all those affected by mental health conditions by offering support, providing education and raising community awareness,” and I’m grateful to support an organization making such a meaningful difference in our community. Through programs like peer-to-peer support, art therapy, group therapy, grief counseling, and other community resources, they continue to create a safe and supportive space for individuals and families navigating life’s challenges. These children’s safety kits include fingerprint ink cards, personal data keepers, online and social media safety tips, and resources for navigating difficult situations like bullying. Having these tools and conversations in place can provide peace of mind and help keep children safe.

Congratulations to the winners of our scholarship competition! Between the competition for high school seniors and the competition for members 21 and up, we gave away $622,000 to 370 member students. See the full list of winners here:
