Why I do what I do

Why I do what I do

I chose this career because it’s all about helping others. I help my members plan for a secure financial future.

I serve members in…

the whole Phoenix Valley area, but mostly the East Valley.

I can help you plan for life using a variety of tools, including…

life insurance and annuities.

I enjoy working with…

families and many local nonprofit organizations.

I am very proud of…

how much help I can and do give to my community.

Before Modern Woodmen, I…

sold real estate since 1990 and managed The Mammoth Steakhouse & Saloon until we sold it in 2006.

I chose Modern Woodmen because…

of the way it supports our local community. My late husband started with them first after selling the Steakhouse. I helped him build the business and fell in love with MWA after learning more about them. Ironically, I found out that Modern Woodmen has been in my family since 1910. I have the original certificates for my great grandfather from 1910 and my Uncle Larry from 1940.

The best part of my career is…

helping people plan their retirements and securing the quality of life for families.

My life outside of work

My family includes…

a dog and a cat. I am lucky enough to still have my mother and father both living in Arizona. I have three great sisters that I am very close with and, yes, a boyfriend now. However, my late husband, Hux, will be forever in my heart. I never had any kids. I do have a girl named Jena who calls me Mom. She is getting close to 30 years old now, but we have had a special relationship since she was 11.

In my free time, you can find me…

riding horses, on my pontoon boat or kayaking at Canyon Lake, golfing, hiking the Superstition and Goldfield Mountains, camping on the rim, doing visits with my therapy dog Jessie or just spending time with family and friends. I do hit a lot of concerts with some of my girlfriends, too.

I’m passionate about…

people, animals and my community. God has blessed me with a great family and many friends, the sweetest animals and a loving community.

My greatest blessing is…

having a wonderful family so many friends. I truly love them all. I'm enjoying God's greatest blessing -- love!

My personal motto is…

attitude is everything!

My hidden talent is…

listening and bringing peace and understanding to people around me.

Community impact

My local community impact

I have lived in my community…

since 1981. I moved here right out of high school and made the big jump to Apache Junction from Phoenix, just 40-50 miles away. What takes about 45 minutes now by all the freeways took about three hours back then. My mom thought I was moving far out into the sticks, but she followed me many years later and now lives in Apache Junction, too.

What I like best about my community is…

the people. We have the best and most heartfelt community around. Visitors always say what nice people are here. Even in the stores where they don't even know you.

I’m a member of…

Superstition Mountain Promotional Corporation (SMPC), Goldfield Ghost Riders (GGR), Apache Junction Chamber of Commerce, Apache Junction Elks Lodge and The Church at The Mount. I am a founding member of both SMPC and GGR. Very proud to say that SMPC just passed the $1 MILLION mark of funds put back into the community.

My favorite volunteer activities are…

those where I am making an impact in my community through Modern Woodmen activities and programs. MWA just fits in perfectly with my charitable nature. I love helping people!

It’s very important to me to support my community. My favorite Modern Woodmen programs are:

Matching Fund projects that raise money for people in need. I run two chapters and put a lot of money back into my community. I also really love providing free educational programs to schools, Boys and Girls Club and Head Start programs.

My favorite memory from a fraternal event is…

when I had someone come up to me and say that she wouldn't be walking if I hadn't helped her purchase her prosthetic leg, which I did through a Matching Fund project.

Also…

Presenting a Hometown Hero award is very rewarding to me. Everyone likes to know they are appreciated for what they do for others and our community.

Painting the halls at Peralta Trails Elementary School.

On Saturday I had a great time painting the halls at Peralta Trails Elementary School. Through a chapter we provided the paint, brushes, drop cloths and tape. While I was at Home Depot buying the products, I got to talking with the Behr distributor, who said he wanted to help as well. Yes, he showed up to help me, other members, a local church group, the principal and a couple of teachers get the job done. It looks great! I have donated trees and shade to this school in the past. I love the fact that the students participate in Modern Woodmen's School Speech Contest every year, and the school has a plaque with the names of the winners each year proudly displayed in the front office. Children -- they are our future.
