Why I do what I do

Why I do what I do

I am so blessed to be able to make a living by helping others as well as their communities. Each day, I sit down and help people overcome financial concerns and obstacles. I also get to help my community with our fraternal programs and activities. It’s very rewarding to be able to do what I do.

I serve members in…

the Plainwell area and throughout Michigan, Indiana and Wisconsin.

I can help you plan for life using a variety of tools, including…

life insurance, annuities, stocks, bonds, ETFs, mutual funds and variable annuities.

I enjoy working with…

individuals, couples, families, retirees and those nearing retirement, self-employed people and a variety of business owners. Helping individuals and small groups meet their current and future financial and insurance needs is how I have built my practice the last few years.

I attended…

Otsego High School and went on to Aquinas College for a business administration degree. After college, I attended the Institute of Real Estate Management for my CPM designation, Kaplan University for my securities licensing, and The American College for my LUTCF designation. I am currently enrolled in the RICP designation program through The American College.

I am very proud of…

earning the Life Advisor of the Year award for 2008-2013, the Top Advisor of the Year award for 2013, the FICF designation in 2012 and the LUTCF designation in 2013. Also, being a member of the Century Club eight of the last nine years.

Before Modern Woodmen, I…

worked in the real estate development and management industry for 25+ years throughout the state of Michigan. I managed and developed single family homes, multiple apartment complexes, government facilities, office buildings and medical complexes.

I chose Modern Woodmen because…

of how we support our members to help them achieve their financial goals and dreams. I also chose Modern Woodmen because of our continued support of the communities and members through hands-on volunteer projects, social and educational projects. We're making a difference in the world around us.

The best part of my career is…

helping my members and the local communities. Whether it's planning for retirement, protecting their families with insurance, planting trees or flowers throughout the downtown or honoring one of our local heroes, I feel good knowing that we are making an impact in the lives of our members and the communities at large.

A favorite moment in my career was when…

I understood how important the plans that I help with are for my members. When I showed one of my members that she was able to retire and live comfortably because of the plans we had made several years before. When I delivered a life insurance check to a family following a tragic motorcycle accident of their 18-year-old son. This truly makes a difference in the lives of our members.

“The best part of my career is helping my members and the local communities. Whether it's planning for retirement, protecting their families with insurance, planting trees or flowers throughout the downtown or honoring one of our local heroes, I feel good knowing that we are making an impact in the lives of those around us.”

My life outside of work

My family includes…

my wife of over 40 years, Paula, our son, Lee, and our daughter, Hannah.

In my free time, you can find me…

enjoying car shows and baseball games in the summer months, watching University of Michigan or Notre Dame college sports in the fall, working in my yard at home or the office, helping friends/members with variety of home improvement projects or enjoying fraternal activities with our friends and members throughout the state of Michigan.

I’m passionate about…

helping others achieve their goals and dreams, and helping make our communities a better place for residents and visitors to the area.

My greatest blessing is…

my family and the friends we have made through Modern Woodmen.

My personal motto is…

to always treat others the way you would want to be treated and to look for the positive in every situation.

My hidden talent is…

being able to renovate or restore items that others have discarded as having outlived their usefulness.

Community impact

My local community impact

I have lived in my community…

for the past 15 years -- since we moved here following my career in real estate. Having grown up in the area, we were able to move back to enjoy this part of the state of Michigan.

What I like best about my community is…

the hometown feel. It is, and always will be, a small community built on the belief that everyone is an asset to the community. People genuinely care and give back to make this community a great place to live, work and raise a family.

I’m a member of…

Otsego Plainwell Chamber of Commerce, the Plainwell Rotary Club, Knights of Columbus Council and St. Margaret Catholic Church in Otsego.

My favorite volunteer activities are…

hands-on activities where I can see the results of my hard work and helping a Modern Woodmen member or family member in need. I enjoy almost any activity that will work toward making our community an even better place.

It’s very important to me to support my community. My favorite Modern Woodmen programs are:

the Matching Fund events we do to help the members of our communities, and the social and educational opportunities with local chapters around the state of Michigan.

My favorite memory from a fraternal event is…

when we organized a motorcycle run to raise over $6,500 for domestic violence awareness and support for those in need of these services. While I am not a motorcyclist myself, we were designated to ride "shotgun" and enjoy the camaraderie while driving our 1969 Olds Cutlass Supreme.

Also…

when we helped two different community members gain additional independence by designing, purchasing, and building wheelchair ramps for them. We were able to make a difference in the lives of others just by joining together to help.
