The Business Was Thriving. Her Retirement Wasn't.
"I'm reinvesting everything back into my business."
(This is a fictional story created for illustrative purposes only.)
Nicole had built a successful business from scratch. Every extra dollar went right back into growing the business.
A new website. A better laptop. Professional branding. Continuing education. Networking events. Software subscriptions. Business coaching.
She smiled every time she spent money on something that would help her business grow.
"I'll focus on retirement once the business is bigger."
Five years became ten. Revenue doubled. Then tripled!
From the outside, Nicole looked incredibly successful. But during a conversation with her CPA, one question stopped her in her tracks.
"How much have you contributed toward your own retirement this year?"
Silence.
She had spent years investing in the asset she worked in, but almost nothing in the person who would eventually want to stop working.
She also learned she had missed opportunities to lower her tax bill through retirement contributions available to self-employed business owners. Instead, she'd simply paid the tax and moved on, believing there weren't many options for someone without employees.
Nicole later admitted, "I knew how to build a business. I never learned how to use my business to build wealth."
Nicole assumed that because her business was valuable, it automatically meant she was financially secure. She delayed investing for retirement and missed years of potential compound growth and tax advantages available to business owners.
What an advisor might have caught:
Retirement plan options for self-employed business owners (such as SEP IRAs, Solo 401(k)s, or other appropriate strategies)
Opportunities to reduce taxable income through retirement contributions
The long-term value of starting earlier, even with modest contributions
Diversifying personal wealth instead of relying solely on the future value of the business
Creating an exit strategy so the business wasn't her only retirement plan
Balancing reinvestment in the business with investing in her future
Coordinating retirement planning with her tax professional to maximize available strategies
